Ron Thomas Cup

Presented to Sunday Batsman of the season

Ron was a west countryman who came to Rayleigh to teach. He was a good athlete and not only did he play cricket for Rayleigh Fairview as a good batsman, he played and coached badminton at a very high level. His wife Pat was also a very good supporter or the club and his son also played for us.
After a medical he was warned that he had a heart murmur and that he should no longer play sport, particularly badminton. He and Pat discussed this and he said that he could not fancy life with no sport so he would carry on regardless. A decision supported by Pat.
About a year later he was playing badminton in a coaching capacity and went for a smash, fell to the ground and died of a heart attack. His wife said soon afterwards that she was on the balcony watching and knew he was dead as soon as he hit the ground.
