Broomfield 1st XI v Rayleigh Fairview 1st XI - Won by 1 wkt
On an overcast afternoon in Chelmsford, Rayleigh Fairview won the toss and elected to bowl first. A spell of rain before the start of the game delayed the start until 1.30 making the game a 41 over game. As always, opening bowlers Jamie Lawson and Will Osborne had the batsmen in trouble from the very first ball and both took an early wicket each to have Broomfield 12 for 3 after 5 overs. Wickets continued to fall throughout the broomfield innings as they were bowled out for 118 after 35 overs. The only batsmen to get going was Rob Lynn who scored a fine 61 before being caught by C Mclean off of the bowling on Nick Moore. Pick of the Fairview bowlers were, J Lawson 10 overs 6 maidens 2 for 10, W Osborne 3 for 34 and D Lawson 2 for 26.
After tea, Fairview set out to chase down the total set by Broomfield, but it wasnt to be easy! A good start with the ball by Fisher and Turner had Worship back in the Pavilion with only 5 on the board. Gareth Crompton and Will Osborne then got together and steadied the ship before Osborne holed out to cover. The well known Fairview collapse was about to start, with wickets falling regularly!! A mixture of poor shot selection and batsmen walking across there stumps giving the umpires no choice but to give blatant LBW's. It was left to numbers 10 and 11, T Webster and N Moore to see the game home for the away side with a streaky well placed outside edge from Moore going over the boundary line to seal a must needed victory to keep Fairview top of the table by 1 point!! Outstanding figures of 5 for 30 by Eglin the Broomfield captain stood out in the 2nd innings and G Crompton top scoring with a well worked 23.
On to next week when Fairview host Old Chelmsfordians in another must win game!!!

The team photo is possibly a 1st XI or a Sunday XI from late 60s or maybe 1970.
